If you don't close up the top, won't squirrels get in?
The tendency of my tomato plants to exceed six feet in height makes building some sort of removable top impractical.
The squirrels do get in, but they have to work at it. I have found that if I leave blemished tomatoes outside the enclosure for them they will go for those and mostly leave the ones inside the fence alone. Squirrels may be talented at stealing food, but they'd really rather do as little work as possible.
